From the CLI as root, the following commands will format, and build a ext2 filesystem on a USB stick. First you have to create the partition, then you have to build the filesystem on it. The blkid command from util-linux v2.18+ is required for exfat detection. The swaplabel command from util-linux v2.18+ is required to write labels and UUIDs on linux-swap. In this tutorial, the name of the drive am going to format is Seth and its path under the filesystem is /dev/sdc1. Take note of the drive you wish to format.

The command above will display the directory path of your various drives. Look for the USB drive you want to format, by running: $ df.
